Legislative Staff Release
Published 17-Feb-2011
Legislation that would free up taxpayer money by letting lawmakers opt out of the state employees’ group health and life insurance plans was approved by a House committee today (Thursday, February 17).
“My hope is that state lawmakers who receive coverage through a private business or practice will opt out of receiving state-funded benefits,” Dustin Roberts, a Durant Republican, said. “It’s a simple way to save some tax dollars.”
House Bill 1062 would let lawmakers opt out as long as they are covered by a separate insurance plan. Any money saved would be retained by the state under the legislation.
H.B. 1062 was approved by the House Government Modernization Committee and now awaits consideration by the full House.
