Senate honors Ronald Reagan, America’s 40th president

In one of its first orders of business for the 2011 Legislative Session, the State Senate unanimously approved Senate Resolution 2 honoring the life of the country’s 40th President, Ronald Reagan, and recognizing the 100th anniversary of his birth. The resolution, by Sen. Cliff Branan, also designates February 6-12, 2011 as “Ronald Reagan Week” in the State of Oklahoma.
“President Reagan dedicated his life to serving freedom and helping others whether it was as an entertainer, union leader, governor or President,” said Branan, an Oklahoma City Republican. “As President, he inherited a disillusioned nation shackled by rampant inflation and high unemployment, but through bipartisanship he enacted a bold agenda that helped restore accountability and common sense to government, which led to unprecedented economic expansion and opportunity for millions of Americans.”
Reagan was elected as the 40th President of the United States in 1981 and served two terms in the White House. In the election for his second term, he received three-fifths of the country’s votes and was victorious in 49 of the 50 states in the general election – a record unsurpassed in the history of American presidential elections.
“As a country, we need to remember President Reagan and the many contributions he made to our country through his active social policy agenda for the nation’s children, his commitment to our armed forces and his vision of ‘peace through strength’,” said Branan. “We have and continue to face the worst economic downfall in our country’s history. We must remember what President Reagan taught us. We need bold vision and ideas like his in order to help restore our country.”
